The extent of my purging and organizing since the new year knows no bounds. You would think the tiny size of my apartment would create bounds, but there are just so many places that things can get out of control. I've been getting high on the feeling of getting rid of old, unused and unneeded things and this weeks fix came from purging and cleaning a bin of old journals and pictures from under my bed. Note: this task is made far easier if you've had a couple glasses of wine.
I found a whole stack of photos of my college pottery work. I had taken the photos shortly after graduation in 2003 then added copy to them, designed them graphically and used them as portfolio pieces. Shown here are a few of the photos.

When I was looking through the stack of pictures I thought to myself this is why I miss film cameras sometimes. When you shot with film you took a roll of pictures, you got them all developed, and you dealt only with the best ones. But they all got stored together; the good, the bad and the ugly, and then sometimes when you're looking through old stuff you come upon them and get to flip through and have a little trip down memory lane while you're sitting in bed way past your bed time and you have a little wine buzz. There's something so sweet and nostalgic about that.
Digital cameras don't allow for old photos to end up under your bed, so you miss out on that revisiting. But on the other hand, shooting digital would have allowed me to take many more photos of my pottery and perhaps I would have ended up with better shots and thus have a better portfolio. And there's the other advantage that digital doesn't allow for crappy pictures to get strewn around your house in plastic bins that you then have to purge years later. Not to mention how annoying it is to have to scan in photos and then photoshop out the imperfections.
And so the digital vs. film battle rages on. In the mean time, I liked looking through my old college work shots. I miss throwing pottery. These pictures are going straight back under my bed where they're safe. Maybe next week I'll go through my portfolio pages from my life drawing class and you can all enjoy my nudie sketches. One of the male models we frequently drew had a Bucky Badger tattooed on his ass, but I don't believe I ever actually drew it in. I would totally post it if I did.
